Nigeria’s DSS Files Terrorism Charges Against Mahdi Shehu Over Alleged False Publications

According to the DSS, Shehu spread doctored videos claiming the Nigerian government had allowed France to establish a military base in Northern Nigeria.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has accused a whistleblower and activist Muhammad Mahdi Shehu of disseminating false information and inciting public disorder, leading to five terrorism-related charges against him.

Shehu was granted bail by a Kaduna State High Court, set at N3 million, with the condition that two reputable clerics act as his sureties.

This followed an earlier ruling by a Chief Magistrate’s Court on January 2, 2025, ordering his detention over a social media post considered a national security threat.

According to the DSS, Shehu spread doctored videos claiming the Nigerian government had allowed France to establish a military base in Northern Nigeria.

SaharaReporters previously reported that Shehu was detained based on these allegations.

The charges filed at the Federal High Court, Kaduna, include false publication to cause public alarm and dissemination of terrorism-related false information.

Justice Rilwan Aikawa had earlier granted the DSS 60 days to detain Shehu for investigation, invoking the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Shehu’s bail terms also require him to surrender his passport, seek court approval for travel, and report to the DSS monthly.
