Breaking: Spain FA President Rubiales Resigns after Kissing a Player At Women’s World Cup Final

He had already been temporarily suspended from his job by FIFA for his conduct at the final.

Luis Rubiales, the suspended President of the Spanish Football Federation, has resigned three weeks after kissing a player, Jenni Hermoso, on the lips after Spain beat England to win their first-ever Women’s World Cup title in Sydney, Australia.

Rubiales in a message posted on X, formerly known as Twitter on Sunday said that after his swift suspension by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), he cannot return to his post.

“After my swift suspension by FIFA, and the rest of the cases building against me, it is clear that I cannot return to the post,” Rubiales said.

He had already been temporarily suspended from his job by FIFA for his conduct at the final.

Rubiales said that he had informed interim Spanish federation president Pedro Rocha about his resignation.

Rubiales will also leave his position as a vice president at UEFA, the European football governing body which pays him 250,000 euros ($268,000) annually.

The Spanish female footballer involved, Jenni Hermoso, had filed a criminal complaint against Rubiales over the kissing incident.

Hermoso gave her testimony last Tuesday, putting Rubiales at risk of facing criminal charges for what transpired between him and Hermoso.
