Abuilding under construction near the Ochanja Market in the popular Onitsha town in Anambra State has collapsed, trapping yet-to-be-ascertained number of persons.
The building was said to have collapsed at about 8pm on Monday with some of the workers still inside the building, creating panic around the area as passers-by and residents of the area were making efforts to rescue the trapped victims.
Witnesses and residents of the area on Tuesday said that one person had been confirmed dead while two others who had been rescued sustained varying degrees of injury, as rescue operations are still ongoing.
SaharaReporters’ efforts to confirm the incident from the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, and an official of the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (ANSEMA), failed as none of them answered calls made to them nor responded to messages sent to at the time of filing this report.
