A Lagos resident has lamented how the Nigeria Police Force and the state government abandoned her 12-year-old daughter, Aminat Alage after she was tear-gassed by the policemen attached to Dopemu, Alabo Police Station.
SaharaReporters learned that Aminat was tear-gassed by police personnel deployed to quell the unrest created by some secondary school students around her school, Adam Yakubu Memorial High School.
Aminat’s mother claimed that some politicians are milking the situation to syphon public funds.
She further stated that her daughter had lost an eye.
According to her, the family spent about N1.5 million on the initial surgery with no assistance from the state government or police force.
In a video made available to SaharaReporters, Aminat’s mother said: “The day this incident happened, DPO (Divisional Police Officer) came to LASUTH (Lagos State University Teaching Hospital) to see us, and when he saw her face, he was shocked.
“He gave us N50,000 to continue the treatment. Since then, nobody has come again. The DPO stopped coming, the Commissioner of Police also stopped coming despite their promise to help us.
“The House of Assembly invited us but unfortunately, they were discussing the school. They only heard our story and since then they have not taken any action on the matter. But they only gave us N50,000 for transportation.
“What I think is happening now is that they have turned this matter to politics, and my child’s life is at risk. We have only done one operation out of three operations and they kept telling the public that they had given us money.
“They even said on the radio that she was offered a scholarship, and we did not see anything. If it is their child that is in this critical position, will they abandon her?
“This is bad, we should fear God in all our dealings. Even though the money we spent so far is about N1.5 million for the first operation, none of them returned the money. They are now using it for politics and people started spreading rumours on the matter. You are using my child’s picture to steal money and you did not do anything for the child and the parent. The government should have mercy on us.
“They should pity my child; her future is very important to me if it is not important to you. After all, you too have children of her age. This is wickedness. I beg you in the name of God, the government should do something on this matter. Those using us to collect money, lying that we have been given money, we did not receive N1 from anybody.”
