At least 15 students and staff members of the Federal University Gusau (FUG) in Zamfara State have regained their freedom from captivity after being held by a group of terrorists who kidnapped them seven months ago.

This was disclosed in a series of tweets on Monday morning by counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad area, Zagazola Malama.

He also attached images of the freed abductees to his post.

Zagazola said the students and staff members were among those kidnapped when the terrorists invaded their school in February.

He wrote: “The students of Federal University Gusau (FUG) and some staff members who were abducted seven months ago have regained their freedom from their captors.

“It was gathered that the students and staff were kidnapped during an attack by bandits in the Gusau area in February of this year.

“After spending an extended period in captivity, it has been confirmed that all the abducted individuals have returned in good health. Although details of how their release was secured remain unclear, security forces were said to have played a crucial role in their rescue.”

When contacted, the Zamfara State Police Command spokesman said he was not aware of the development, adding that he would verify and get back.

SaharaReporters had reported how terrorists also held some university students they kidnapped in September 2023 till April 2024 before releasing them.

A cousin of one of the female students abducted told SaharaReporters in April: “My sister was finally released together with other kidnapped students yesterday. All of them have been freed now. This is after spending 205 days in captivity.”
