Wine, who is also the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a former Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East, was en route to visit one of his lawyers when the incident occurred.
Ugandan activist and politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, was on Tuesday shot in the leg by the police in Bulindo, Kira Municipality.
Wine, who is also the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) and a former Member of Parliament for Kyadondo County East, was en route to visit one of his lawyers when the incident occurred.
The shooting took place as Wine returned from checking on Musisi George, a lawyer associated with his party.
According to the administrator of Bobi Wine’s Facebook page, the police and military, under the command of one Twesigye, surrounded Wine’s vehicles and began firing live bullets, teargas canisters, and other projectiles.
The attack resulted in Wine being hit in the leg. He has been rushed to a hospital and is receiving urgent medical attention from a team of doctors, the statement said.
It was another attempt on the life of their leader by the regime of President Yoweri Museveni, the post stated.
The statement reads, “Bobi Wine has been shot in the leg by police in Bulindo! He’s been rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention. We’ll keep the country updated on his situation.
“This evening, as our President Bobi Wine returned from Bulindo in Kira Municipality where he had gone to check on one of our lawyers, Musisi George, the police and military under the command of one Twesigye surrounded our vehicles and started firing live bullets, teargas canisters and other projectiles. In the process, our President #BobiWine who was clearly targeted, was shot in the leg. He is currently being attended to by a team of medical doctors.
“This is yet another attempt on the life of our President by the Museveni regime!”
However, Uganda Police Force in a statement on Tuesday said it would conduct an investigation into the matter to verify the facts.
It said, “Today 03 September 2024, Hon. Kyagulanyi Robert was invited by Mr. George Musisi (Lawyer), to a Thanksgiving ceremony in Bulindo, Kiira Municipality, Wakiso District.
“Hon. Kyagulanyi participated in the celebration, which concluded peacefully.
“When Hon. Kyagulanyi left the venue, he and his team moved out of their cars and embarked on a procession up to Bulindo town; however, the police advised against it. Despite their guidance, he insisted on proceeding and closing the road, leading to police intervention to prevent the procession.
“During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries. Police officers on site claim he stumbled while getting into his vehicle, causing the injury, whereas Hon. Kyagulanyi and his team assert that he was shot.
“An investigation will be conducted to clarify the facts.
“He was taken to Najaeem Medical Centre in Bulindo for first aid.
“The police will investigate the alleged shooting and any related incidents.”
