DON’T RUN AWAY FROM TRUE FEDERALISM – SOYINKA, OTHERS TELL FG
Chieftains of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) on Monday insisted that true federalism was the way for Nigeria to go to overcome its current challenges.
The NADECO leaders were the Chairman, Rear Adm. Ndubuisi Kanu (rtd), Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Joe Okei-Odumakin, among others. They advised the Federal Government to discard the current unitary system and embrace true federalism.
They spoke at the 22nd anniversary wreath-laying in honour of Kudirat Abiola, the widow of the late business mogul, Chief Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.
The event was organised in Lagos by Women Arise for Change Initiative and the Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND).
The theme of the event was “22 Years After: The Way Forward’’.
Soyinka described late Kudirat as a warrior and a protagonist of human value.
”Democracy and human liberation are embedded in the late Kudirat Abiola and her spirit lives as she has led an exemplary life to inspire our young women.
”We must not also forget those women who are still living and are continuing the tradition of Kudirat, such as the young girl – Leah Shuaribu.
“The girl who said: ‘No, you will not take my freedom away’. That is the spirit of Kudirat.
”She spoke on behalf of not just her gender; not for democracy but she spoke on behalf of humanity.
”No matter our calling, religious background, daily challenges and ideological disagreements, at the basis of it all, is freedom and human liberty and that is what that young girl represents.
”Let us inscribe her name in our hearts to understand exactly what the struggle is all about.
