Edo Government Shows Clemency, Withdraws Charges Against Benin Palace Chiefs

The charges were filed in connection with the August 2022 demolition of homes in the community of Ulegun.

The Edo State Government has withdrawn the 29 criminal counts against the Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, and six other palace officials.

The charges were filed in connection with the August 2022 demolition of homes in the community of Ulegun. The Edo State High Court had ordered the defendants to be held in prison by Justice Mary Itsuel.

On Wednesday, the State Director of Public Prosecution, Orobosa Okunbor, announced the withdrawal of the case against the defendants, who were arraigned in August 2022 for their alleged involvement in the demolition of houses in Ulegun community, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.

The defendants, including the Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor, and six palace officials, had been remanded in prison by Justice Mary Itsueli of the Edo State High Court.

On Wednesday, the case took a surprising turn when the State Director of Public Prosecution, Orobosa Okunbor, announced the withdrawal of the charges against the defendants.

The move was reportedly made to pave the way for a peaceful resolution and reconciliation, as the state government has offered compensation to those affected by the demolition.

The defendants, including Frank Irabor, Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council, had earlier pleaded not guilty to the 29 counts against them.

In response to the withdrawal, Irabor expressed his gratitude to the state government and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Irabor expressed his appreciation for the government’s gesture, hailing it as a significant step towards reconciliation and healing.
