Lawyers Stranded As Judiciary Workers Shut Down Abuja Court Of Appeal Over Nationwide Strike

SaharaReporters had reported how JUSUN on Saturday began the mobilisation of its members for the strike action in a press statement issued by Comrade M. J. Akwashiki, JUSUN General Secretary.

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Court of Appeal Chapter in Abuja on Monday grounded all the court activities in compliance with the ongoing nationwide strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

SaharaReporters had reported how JUSUN on Saturday began the mobilisation of its members for the strike action in a press statement issued by Comrade M. J. Akwashiki, JUSUN General Secretary.

In a video clip uploaded by TVC News on X on Monday, it was observed that there was total compliance by the judicial workers at the Court of Appeal in Abuja.

This was also confirmed by Job Akor, Financial Secretary, JUSUN (Court of Appeal Chapter) while justifying the strike action.

He said, “The ongoing strike is 100% compliance. We are not taking anything less, we are to comply fully. They (the government) may say it (our demand) is not realistic. Our point still remains.

“The federal government should sit down and make a breakdown of what they are proposing. Because we learned that they are proposing N60,000. And for a family of five, can N60,000 be enough to buy a bag of rice monthly? Certainly not. Our demand is well broken down.

“We want them to break theirs down, to be sure whether what they are proposing will be enough for a family. To us, our demand is realistic. The masses cannot suffer the strike because you know there have been no tomatoes in the last two weeks in Nigeria. There is nothing.

“Are we not suffering already? We need something that will cushion the effect of the economy on what is going on in Nigeria.”

The statement issued at the weekend read: “Following a declaration of industrial action by NLC and TUC, beginning from Monday 3rd June 2024 due to the inability of government to conclude the negotiation of the new National Minimum Wage and refusal to reverse the increase in electricity tariff, I am directed to inform you to commence mobilisation ahead of the action.

“The action will start midnight on Sunday nationwide, so all branches /chapters chairmen and secretaries of JUSUN are expected to ensure strict compliance to this directive.

“All vice presidents of our great unions are to monitor their respective zones to ensure compliance with the total shut down of all Courts and Judicial Institutes across Nigeria.

“NOTE that the nationwide action is to ensure governments (a) Agree on a new national minimum wage and subsequently pass it into law before the end of this month as they were notified (b) Reverse the hike in electricity tariff without consulting the stakeholders as required by the Law to N225/kwh back to N66/kwh (c) Stop the apartheid categorization of Nigerian electricity consumers into bands.”
