As the organised labour and tripartite committee on minimum wage continue their negotiation for a new minimum wage for the Nigerian workers, the Trade Union Congress President, Comrade Festus Osifo has explained that there is no amount cast in stone.

Featuring on Channels TV programme on Friday, Osifo explained that the organised labour was open to adjustments.

He also gave the reason why the organised labour recently went on strike.

SaharaReporters recently reported that at the end of the Tripartite Committee meeting, the organised labour presented N250,000, insisting that anything below that, considering the current inflation and devaluation of naira, would not be a living wage.

However, government representatives and the Organised Private Sector offered N62,000. President Bola Tinubu is still expected to make known his decision on the matter.

But while featuring on a Channels TV programme on Friday, the TUC president explained that no amount is cast in stone. According to him, one of the reasons why organised labour recently went on strike was because when it got to N60,000, the government told them pointblank that a kobo would not be added.

“What we said is that for us when we give figures, there is always a room to meander, there is always a room for us to do some adjustments here and there,” he explained.

“So, there is no figure that is sacrosanct, there is no figure that is cast in stone that both parties will be fixated on it.

“One of the reasons that we went on industrial action the last time was because when it got to N60,000, they told us that a kobo cannot even join the N60,000, that they cannot even add one naira to it.

“So that was one of the reasons that led to that industrial action beyond the fact that there were also delays.”
