According to Alake, the collapse occurred at a site operated by African Minerals and Logistics Ltd, prompting an immediate response from federal authorities.

Seven people have been rescued from a collapsed mining site in Farin Doki, Galadima Kogo in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.

This was disclosed by the Nigerian Minister of Solid Minerals Dele Alake on his X handle (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that on Monday about 50 persons were trapped in the mining site following rainfall.

According to Alake, the collapse occurred at a site operated by African Minerals and Logistics Ltd, prompting an immediate response from federal authorities.

“We have mobilised our Federal Mines Officer (FMO) and officials of the Mines Inspectorate to the collapsed mining site in Galadima Kogo, Shiroro Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State,” Alake stated.

The minister detailed the rescue efforts, noting that collaboration between government officials and the mining company led to the successful rescue of seven victims.

“Upon learning of the incident, we worked closely with the mining company to rescue seven victims, some with injuries,” Alake said. “Rescue operations with excavators are currently underway to ensure we avert any loss of lives.”

Alake emphasised the importance of a recently announced policy mandating remedial measures for mining pits as part of the licensing process.

“I recently announced a policy that makes remedial measures for mining pits mandatory as part of the criteria for applying for mining licenses. This policy aims to minimize such accidents in the future,” he explained.

The ministry says it will continue to monitor the situation closely.

“We are actively monitoring the situation at the mining site operated by African Minerals and Logistics Ltd,” Alake assured the public.

Alake also committed to a thorough investigation to prevent future occurrences.

“Rest assured, we will investigate the causes of the disaster to prevent a recurrence and ensure the safety of all Nigerians,” he said.
