Nigerian Governors Forum Convenes Emergency Meeting In Abuja Over Proposed Minimum Wage

The governors’ emergency meeting is coming after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) postponed its decision on the minimum wage issue on Tuesday.

The 36 state governors in Nigeria will on Wednesday meet in Abuja over the issues of the proposed new minimum wage.

The governors previously rejected the federal government’s proposal of N62,000, stating that some states would need to borrow funds to pay salaries if this amount were implemented.

However, the organised labour is still demanding a N250,000 minimum wage.

The governors’ emergency meeting is coming after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) postponed its decision on the minimum wage issue on Tuesday.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Tuesday told journalists that the FEC could not make a decision due to the involvement of local government, state governments, the federal government, and the organised private sector.

The acting Director of Media and Public Affairs for the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Halima Ahmed, told Daily Trust that the governors would meet on Wednesday at 7pm in Abuja to discuss the matter.
