The Federal High Court will now hear the money laundering case against cryptocurrency exchange Binance and its executives on September 2, 2024, moving up from the initially scheduled date of October 11, 2024.

This change follows a request from the defence lawyers, as reported by Reuters.

The case involves Binance, its U.S. head of financial crime compliance, Tigan Gambaryan, and the exchange’s British-Kenyan regional manager for Africa, Nadeem Anjarwalla.

They are charged with laundering over $35million and tax evasion.

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, denies these allegations.

Nadeem Anjarwalla has fled Nigeria, while Tigan Gambaryan has been in detention since February, with reports of his health deteriorating.

His wife, Yuki Gambaryan, has sought intervention from both the Nigerian and U.S. governments for his release due to health concerns.

The Nigerian government has criticised Binance for its role in weakening the naira, especially as cryptocurrency exchanges have become key platforms for naira trading amid a dollar shortage.

Binance had stopped naira transactions in March following a crackdown on crypto exchanges, which were blamed for fuelling a black market for foreign currency.
