A girl collects water from a small spring just beside where people mine for gold in Gaga village.
When the conflict erupted in Gaga in October 2013, many of the dead were thrown down the village's wells. Fifty-eight wells were contaminated with dead bodies and are now sealed off, leaving the some 8,000 people who live in Gaga with far fewer places to collect water. With more people returning home from the bush, the demand for water is constantly increasing.
The spring, which is little more than a puddle on the side of a rocky hillside, is surrounded by larger pools of muddy water where people mine for gold.
Concern Worldwide is working to increase the number of water points in Gaga. So far, the team has built two water pumps and six wells, but it is not yet enough to cover what was lost in the conflict. They are planning to create a water source at the spring where Anasthasie and Arka collect water, which will provide constant, unlimited access to safe drinking water for the community
