The assault reportedly caused injuries to the visually impaired woman, who was later taken to PHC Tudun Wada for treatment.
Aformer Upper Sharia Court judge, Mahmud Shehu, has been charged in a Magistrates’ Court in Zaria, Kaduna, for allegedly assaulting a visually impaired housewife and her two aides.
The prosecutor, Inspector Adamu Abubakar, explained that the charges include trespass and assault, in violation of sections 327, 237, and 239 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law of 2017.
The incident was reported by Garba Adda’u, a resident of Gonar Ganye, Tudun-Jukun Zaria, at the Tudun Wada Divisional Police Headquarters on September 6.
According to the prosecution, Shehu entered Adda’u’s property, locked the door, and assaulted the man’s wife and her aides with an umbrella, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The assault reportedly caused injuries to the visually impaired woman, who was later taken to PHC Tudun Wada for treatment. Shehu pleaded not guilty to the charges during his court appearance on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
The defendant’s counsel, Mr. S.M. Abubakar, applied for bail, but the prosecutor objected, citing concerns for the complainant’s safety as both parties reside in the same neighbourhood.
Senior Magistrate Lukman Sidi granted Shehu bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety, who must possess a passport and live within the court’s jurisdiction.
The case was adjourned to October 8 for further hearing.
