The National Orientation Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, and the House of Representatives have all warned against the demonstrations.

Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has said no amount of threats can stop the planned nationwide protest over the harsh economic climate in the country.

SaharaReporters had reported how Nigerians had been planning to storm major roads nationwide from August 1, 2024, to August 10, 2024, to demand better governance.

President Bola Tinubu had also urged Nigerians to cancel the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests, telling them to wait for the government’s response to their complaints.

The National Orientation Agency, the Nigeria Police Force, and the House of Representatives have all warned against the demonstrations.

Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, had warned that the protest could lead to destruction similar to the #EndSARS protests in 2020.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun had similarly urged Nigerians to abandon the planned #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.

The police boss had said this on Tuesday during a meeting with commissioners of police in Abuja, stating that holding a nationwide protest would add more woes to the country’s socioeconomic challenges.

Reacting to these developments when he appeared on Tuesday on Channels TV, Femi Falana said, “How do you identify those who are issuing statements; those who are planning the protest, and then engage with them productively?”

He continued: “But threats do not work. In fact, on some occasions, the desperation of the government also has a way of popularising such protests.”

Falana also asked the Nigerian government to identify the leaders of the planned protest and dialogue with them instead of threats.
